Gary Caldwell has crafted distinctive, beautiful art in stainless steel for over 30 years.
<br><br>
He is completely self-taught, with a flair for transforming sheets of stainless steel into fanciful three-dimensional creations. He first researches his subjects for anatomical accuracy. Then, with skilled hands and 6,000 degrees of heat, he bends and shapes flat steel into a lifelike sculptures, and grinds, cuts, and/or welds to create texture on the surface. After this intricate process, he carefully heats the steel with a torch to bring out vibrant colors that include cobalt blue, burnished bronze, and coal black.

The combination of Gary's creativity and the inherent variances in his design process ensures each finished piece of art is original and unique. The beautiful colors are permanent -- little maintenance is required -- so his sculptures are appropriate for display inside a building or out in a garden.

"From working the high rise as a construction welder to building power plants and paper mills, I have managed to use my creative skills in the medium of metal. Attending craft workshops and numerous welding schools, led me to the beauty of copper. I was able to combine my technical skills and love of metal with my favorite school project as a child--creating an insect collection. Many creations later, my inspiration has grown to include all of nature, allowing me to find creativity and satisfaction in the work that has become my life." - Catherine Murphy, Haw Creek Forge

It all started in 1999 with a few make shift tools from the kitchen, some clay and a lot of patience. With just a few high school pottery classes under our belts, we setup our first pottery shop in the family garage and began making and selling Shroomyz ceramic garden mushrooms. The first shop was quite rudimentary to say the least, plaster from the hardware store, super soaker squirt guns and chicken wire were just a few of the makeshift tools we used to make the first Shroomyz. If anyone remembers those very first Shroomyz off the press they truly were "one of a kind." Demand for the Shroomyz grew quickly and our college friends were soon recruited to help out in the JJ Potts studio. Since then most of the original crew has moved on and got "real" jobs but, many of the current employees are still college students working their way through school.

Since leaving the garage, the factory has grown and more equipment has been added to the operation but the original electric kiln given to us by our father to start the operation is still in use today. The production has evolved quite a bit over the years and we have a few more Shroomyz under our belts, but our passion for creating unique and lasting ceramic garden art lives on. We hope you enjoy our work.

My first windbell was the result of years of tinkering with bronze casting and pattern making. After successfully casting my first bell, my focus then turned toward creating windbells as functional art that range from contemporary wind-blown designs to the more animate birds and blue herons.
<br><br>
Each bell has its own unique mottled patina consisting of black, blues, and shades of green. Pronounced areas are then polished to a high bronze luster. Their rich, clear tones vary with size and shape giving each bell its own distinct sound. The durable combination of bronze and cocobolo wood allows the bells to be enjoyed outdoors year-round.
